Feasibility study leads to district heating system

District heating with wood pellets

We were asked by the local council in Schutterwald to carry out a strategic study comparing a number of fuels for the heating of public buildings. As a result of the study, the council opted for a wood pellet system in conjunction with a district heating network. We planned the system and were also responsible for managing its installation.

A school and a sports centre are now supplied by the district heating system. The new system is based on a 800kW wood-pellet boiler which supplies 60% of heat. For reasons of cost effectiveness, the previous 1.5MW oil burners are linked into the heating system for topping up supplies at peak times.

At the time of its construction, the pellet heating system in Schutterwald was the second biggest wood-pellet plant in Germany.
