Solar Thermal
Overview
This area of technology comprises the use of solar energy for the heating of water (as
opposed to the generation of electricity). Common estimates for domestic installations in the
UK are that they can provide 60% of the energy required for hot water. The actual yield
depends on a large number of factors, such as the orientation of the
panels, the amount of shading they are exposed to and the age and quality of panels.
A host of other questions need consideration, particularly in non-domestic environments.
For example, is hot water required evenly
throughout the day/year or do requirements peak at certain times? What provisions can be
made for the storage of hot water? What type of backup system is suitable when the energy
from the sun is insufficient to cover the hot-water needs?
We can answer these questions - and more.
